Cox and Cong Aim to Carry Momentum Into Monterey
MONTEREY, CA – The California men's golf team heads to Monterey this week for the St. Mary's Invitational, aiming to close out its fall season on a high note after a statement win earlier this month.
The Golden Bears will compete against 17 other teams at Bayonet Golf Course, a par-72, 7,104-yard course. The tournament begins Monday, with the first round teeing off at 8:20 a.m. PT.
Cal enters the tournament with fire after capturing the team title at the Fighting Irish Classic earlier in October, marking the program's first team victory since the 2023 Cal Poly Invitational. The Bears will look to carry that success into their final event of the fall season as they aim to finish strong in Monterey.
Sophomore Trevor Cox leads the way after a career-best performance at the Fighting Irish Classic, where he finished tied for second. Cox carded 11 birdies throughout the tournament and finished five-under-par, pushing to propel Cal to the team title in South Bend.
Redshirt junior Sihao Cong also looks to build on a strong showing at the Fighting Irish Classic. After climbing the leaderboard in the final round with a one-under-par 69, Cong secured a career-best tie for fifth, giving the Bears two individual finishes inside the top five.
Cal will look to draw inspiration from its history at the St. Mary's Invitational. The Bears last claimed the tournament title in 2013, dominating the field with a 30-stroke victory. Three Golden Bears finished in the top 10, led by Michael Weaver in second place, Brandon Hagy in third and Michael Kim tied for 8th.
The Bears open play Monday with tee times beginning at 8:20 a.m. PT from holes #1 and #10 as they look to carry their momentum into the final tournament of the fall.
