The Bears Battled The Cardinal For The First Time In 2021

BERKELEY - Facing its first ranked opponent of the 2021 spring campaign, the California field hockey team fell to No. 18 Stanford, 5-1, Tuesday afternoon at Underhill Field in the Golden Bears' final home match of the spring.

Cal fell to 2-5 on the year. Tuesday's contest was a non-conference matchup.

"My whole approach to this game was about growth and learning," said the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead. "We were deliberately trying some things to see where we stand, and to get us in the best position for the next four games. I learned a lot about certain combinations we have and a couple of tactical things we need to get busy on."

Kiki de Bruijne scored her second goal of the season, scoring in back-to-back contests now. She smacked a backhanded shot past the Cardinal keeper with 91 seconds remaining in the third quarter, cutting the Stanford lead down to 3-1 at the time.

Cato Knipping posted a career-high eight saves, surpassing her previous personal best of seven set last season.

All the Bears saw action on the pitch today as part of Onstead's plan to see where her squad is at right now.

"Everybody played today," Onstead said. "I think it's great. We've asked so much of this team since they came back on January 6, and they've been unbelievably committed to staying safe and coming out here everyday and working hard. They've made the sacrifice to not see their families right now, and I'm super impressed by that selflessness. I wanted everybody to get a pat on the back for that."

Cal and Stanford will meet again in an America East Conference match on Sunday, April 11, at 6 p.m. at Stanford.
