BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana scored in the opening minutes of Thursday afternoon's contest against California in Bloomington, Ind., and emerged victorious, 4-2. The Golden Bears got goals from freshman Andrea Earle and senior Megan Psyllos, but couldn't hold off the Hoosiers. Cal fell to 1-3, 1-0, on the season, while Indiana improved to 2-1. Despite suffering defeat, the Bears matched the Hoosiers in shots (11) and earned nine corners to Indiana's five.
Indiana's Kelsey Kiper got the scoring started in the third minute when she slapped a rebound from a previous shot past Cal keeper Maddie Hand. All four of Hand's saves came in the first half. Lena Grote made it 2-0 Indiana when she tipped a shot by Morgan Fleetwood past Hand in the 15th minute.
Cal got on the board 10 minutes later when Psyllos scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The tally came on a penalty corner with the assist coming from sophomore Deanna Kennedy.
In the 45th minute, Indiana regained its' two-goal lead when Jaclyn Zamudio took a shot from the left post that hit the back of the cage. Fleetwood earned her second assist on the afternoon in the process.
Earle tallied her goal, the third of the season for the San Diego native, in the 50th minute. She notched the score on a penalty corner with Kennedy and freshman Shannon Elmitt earning the assists. Kennedy leads the squad in assists with four. She had 10 in her freshman campaign.
After recording two assists earlier in the contest, Fleetwood put the match out of reach with her goal in the 61st minute. Fleetwood received the ball in the middle of the circle and scored on a shot to the left corner of the cage. Kiper tallied the assist.
Earle led all players with four shots on goal. Senior Lisa Lohre posted a defensive save.
Cal stays in Bloomington for a neutral-site contest against Ohio on Friday, Sept. 10, at noon (PT). The Bears then head to Louisville to face the Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. (PT).
