Cal Registers Road Victory In Five Sets
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Dominique Phills came off the bench to register seven kills in the fourth set alone and middle blocker Sawyer Thomsen recorded 12 kills without an error as the travel-weary California volleyball team came all the way back to notch a 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-8 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Florida State on Friday evening at Tully Gymnasium.
The Golden Bears (17-7, 7-6 ACC) registered its first reverse sweep since the final match of the 2025 season against Duke.
Cal, which didn't arrive in Tallahassee until just a few hours before the first serve due to travel delays, played competitively in the first two sets before reaching another gear. The third set was tied 22-22 before a kill by freshman phenom Abby Zimmerman and a pair of FSU hitting errors kept hope alive for the Bears. Phills then provided a huge lift in the fourth set, helping Cal erase an early 4-1 deficit and cruising to a win to force the decisive fifth set.
The final set was over quickly. The Bears raced out to a breathtaking 9-0 lead and held a 12-2 advantage before the Seminoles made a brief run to force a Cal timeout. Cari Bohm, who had eight kills and a match-high seven blocks, ended the match with a kill.
Zimmerman led the Bears with 17 kills and 18 digs while Thomsen finished with a .600 hitting percentage.
Cal stays in the Sunshine State for a match at Miami on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT. The contest airs on ACCNX.
