The Stanford Cardinal Bounced Back Against The Bears
STANFORD— Riding the high of a thrilling sweep against the No. 18 Stanford Cardinal earlier in the week at Haas Pavilion, the California Golden Bears volleyball program took a trip down the road to take on the Cardinal again on Friday.
Although the team and its fans were elated at what was the first sweep of Stanford in program history, they came out flat to open the first set at Maples Pavilion Stanford came out of the gates as hot as they came, scoring five of the first six points. They were able to tie things up a couple of times, but didn't take the lead once.
Stanford's lead grew to as many as seven in large part thanks to their .471 hitting percentage, as the Cardinal went on to win the first set 25-17.
The humbling first set defeat seemed to have awoken Cal in the second, as the Bears sprinted to a 7-3 lead. However, unlike the fifth set which is a race to 15, the first four sets are typically marathons. The Cardinal remained poised, as they erased Cal's 7-3 lead and ended up scoring 16 of the next 21 points. In the blink of an eye, Stanford was up 24-16. The Bears were able to get to 19, but were unable to overcome a sub .100 hitting percentage to stage a heroic comeback, dropping the second 25-19.
Cal took a 1-0 lead in the third set, but quickly saw the Cardinal erase it. With Stanford leading 18-13, the Golden Bears put up a fight down the stretch. The Bears went on a run that saw them tie things up at 23, but it just wasn't the Bears' day as Stanford was able to close out a sweep of their own, winning the set 25-23, and the match 3-0.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Golden Bears will hit the road and head to Florida for meetings with both Florida State and Miami.
