Cal Completes Road Schedule At Virginia On Nov. 14 Following Bye Week
RALEIGH, N.C. - The California football team was tied with NC State at halftime before the Wolfpack took control in the second half in a 31-10 victory over the Golden Bears at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The Wolfpack scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions after halftime to earn the victory.
Heading into a bye week, Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi said he wants his players to "attack at every growth opportunity I can establish. Challenging our group, but I believe in them and I believe that they'll reflect myself as far as continuing to fight."
The Cal defense had held NC State to just 108 total yards in the first half.
Early in the second quarter, the Bears (3-6, 2-4 ACC) trailed 10-0 and had registered only one first down. They then proceeded to march 75 yards in seven plays. On 2nd-and-4 from the NC State 30, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele rolled left and lofted a deep pass for Chase Hendricks, who batted the ball and still managed to come down with it on the goal line.
Cal had cut its deficit to 10-7 with 4:58 left in the first half. Hendricks had a game-high seven catches for 67 yards.
On the final possession of the half, the Bears moved 54 yards in nine plays. Anthony League had a 10-yard reception and a 14-yard run on consecutive snaps. The half ended when Towns McGough made a 38-yard field goal try that sneaked inside the right upright.
"We're struggling right now and it's obvious," Sagapolutele said, "but I think we've just got to go back to the drawing board, just continue to work at it. Like Coach Tosh said, just not give up. We're going to try to figure out a way. We're going to fix it."
For the game, Cal linebackers Odera Okaka (11), AJ Tuitele (9) and Kamar Mothudi (8) each recorded career-highs in tackles.
Cal now has a bye next week before playing its final road game of the season against Virginia on Nov. 14.
