STANFORD – California swimming & diving opened the 2026-27 season with a second-place team finish at its first College Swimming League (CSL) match. The Golden Bears totaled 543.5 points, topping third-place Auburn with 371.5 and fourth-place Ohio State with 255, while falling to Stanford, which finished with 550 points.
The Bears first made the podium in the men's 200-yard backstroke, where Humberto Najera (1:41.05) and Baylor Stanton (1:41.32) took second and third, respectively. In the very next event, Elle Scott (2:09.32) and Silje Slyngstadli (2:09.51) finished first and second in the 200 breaststroke, and Cal rose to the top of the team leaderboard. Both marks ranked among the top 10 times in program history in the event.
Yamato Okadome began his night with a first-place finish and a CSL record in the 200 breaststroke (1:50.88) before winning the men's 50-yard skins event and the 100 breaststroke (52.37). Zach Tan also found the podium in both breaststroke events, finishing second in the 100 (52.95) and third in the 200 (1:55.78).
Ryan Erisman had a phenomenal night for the Bears. The sophomore dominated the 500 freestyle (4:08.55), finishing more than six seconds ahead of second-place finisher Keaton Jones (4:15.27), breaking a CSL record, shaving more than two seconds off his personal-best mark and moving to No. 2 in program history in the event. But his night was only just beginning. Erisman then finished first in the 200 butterfly (1:41.68) before breaking yet another CSL record with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:32.12).
Scott and Mia West headlined the women's side, with both placing in the top two in three events apiece. West topped the 100 butterfly (52.44) and 100 individual medley (53.47) and placed second in the 200 IM (1:56.65). Scott finished second in the 100 IM (53.61) and 100 breaststroke (59.64), in addition to her first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.
Mary-Ambre Moluh and Camille Henveaux represented two more first-place finishes for the Bears, with Henveaux winning the 500 freestyle (4:38.66) and Moluh the 100 backstroke (51.40). The Cal women also took first place in the 4x50 freestyle relay (1:28.02).
The Bears held onto the lead after taking it following the women's 200 breaststroke, carrying it into the very final race of the men's Super Skins event. However, they were disqualified in the final swim of the night. The disqualification awarded the final relay's first-place points to Stanford, resulting in a second-place finish for Cal.
The Bears combined for seven one-two finishes, four broken CSL records and 33 total podium finishes.
The Bears return to action at UC San Diego on Friday, Oct. 9.
