No. 9 Cal Downed By No. 1 Stanford
Bears Close Out Regular Season
REDWOOD SHORES – The No. 9 California women's rowing team fell to No. 1 Stanford at the Big Row on Saturday morning at the Redwood Shores. The Golden Bears' top three varsity eight and two varsity fours were swept by the Cardinal at the annual dual meet.
The dual meet marked the end of the regular season as both teams will now prepare to compete in their first-ever ACC Championships May 16-17 in Clemson, South Carolina.
As is tradition, the Bears dedicated Saturday's races to Jill Costello, the former Cal coxswain who passed away in 2010 at the age of 22 after a battle with lung cancer and wore "Team Jill" tank tops in her honor.
The closest race of the day was between the third varsity eight boats as the Bears and Cardinal battled all the way down the racecourse until Stanford was able to pull away at the end to come away with a nearly three-second margin of victory.
"Our racing with Stanford is always done to honor Jill Costello and to help continue her legacy," head coach
Al Acosta said. "It was great to see Jill's parents, Mary and Jim, today at the race course. It was also a special day in that we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Cal Women's Crew. To be cheered on and feel the support from the women that started this program in 1975 is incredible. Stanford is clearly the fastest team in the country and they showed that today. We have two weeks to get healthy, to make some adjustments, and to get ready for our inaugural ACC Championship."
