REDWOOD SHORES – After sweeping No. 10 Virginia yesterday, the No. 8 California Golden Bears swept No. 11 Syracuse to close the ACC Challenge undefeated at the Redwood Shores on Sunday morning. The Bears' V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and 2V4+ swept the Orange for the second straight year after going undefeated against Syracuse at the Pac-12/ACC Invitational in Virginia last year.

In the first race of the morning with the 2V4+, Cal took a bow to stern lead withing the first 250 meters which grew to a couple seats of open water at 500 meters. After the boats crossed the halfway mark, Syracuse was able to get back within bow to stern contact of Cal over the third 500 meters. Cal responded and didn't allow the Orange to get any closer and won in a time of 7:15.7.

In the 2V8+ race, it was fairly even over the first 500 meters until Cal started to pull away and took a half-boat lead at the halfway mark. The Bears kept pressing and eventually went ahead bow to stern over the third 500 meters. The Orange walked back a few seats over the last 500 meters but were unable to complete the comeback. Cal won in a time of 6:29.8.

In the V8+ duel, Cal took a three-seat lead over the first 250 meters and built it to bow to stern over the second 500 meters. Syracuse walked back a half of a boat by the 1,250- meter mark, but the Bears responded and went back ahead bow to stern with 500 meters to go and held off the Orange for the win in a time of 6:20.4.

In the final race of the day between the two V4+ crews, Cal got off to a great start and took a four-seat lead over the first 250 meters before going ahead by a few seats of open water by the 1,000-meter mark. Syracuse pulled to within bow to stern over the third 500 meters and as close as a few seats with 250 meters to go, but Cal was able to hold off Syracuse in the closing 250 meters for the win in 7:07.4.

"We're grateful that Syracuse and Virginia made the trip out here," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "I'm glad we got some good sunny and warm California conditions today. Yesterday was windy and the conditions were rough, but thankfully our crews were able to get some separation early and kind of maintain it through the racing. Today, I thought the team did a great job of focusing their efforts, racing hard and improving on Saturday's racing. We're looking forward to getting back to Briones and getting some good hard training before heading up to Seattle in two weeks."
