BERKELEY - California won its 17th straight match against Stanford Saturday afternoon, keeping the Scrum Axe in Berkeley for the official reopening of Witter Rugby Field as 18 players scored a total of 28 tries for the Golden Bears.
Fullback Jake Anderson connected on 10-of-15 conversions in the first half before yielding to Andre Coquillard (1-for-1), Hunter Frisinger (1-for-2), and Brandon Kraft (6-for-10) for placekicking duties. Anderson, Seamus Kelly, Ahmed Chehade, Jared Braun, Kenny Bruzzone, Max Shaulis, Josh Tucker, and Scott Walsh each scored two tries in the win.
A rousing rendition of the national anthem delivered by Cal women's soccer player Grace Leer, preceded by the team's first run onto the field through the posts on the west side of the stadium, offered ample opportunity for players and fans to ponder the almost three years during which the team could not host a home match.
"We all had chills during that anthem and it was indescribable to run back out through those posts," said Kelly.
True to form, the team turned its focus inward to put its performance in perspective on an important day for the program. "It's important to play to the level that we want to play at and that was the focus leading up to this game," said Anderson. "It's an amazing thing for me in my third year to play my first game at Witter. For all the guys who've played before me, it's a pleasure to represent them."
The Bears move their season record to 6-0 with five shutouts and only one try given up to the opposition. Stanford falls to 1-2. The Cardinal last won the match for the Scrum Axe in 1996.
Cal now turns its attention to the home opener of the PAC Rugby Conference next Saturday, Feb. 2, when the Bears host Arizona State on Witter Rugby Field at 1 p.m. for the Starting XV followed by a reserve-grade contest.
