With today's 50-31 California victory over Southern Utah, Jeff Tedford earned his 80th career victory as head coach at Cal. Tedford is the Golden Bears' all-time winningest coach.
Today's game was the first-ever meeting between Cal and Southern Utah. The Bears are now 6-0 all-time against FCS opponents. Last year, Cal defeated FCS foe Presbyterian at AT&T Park, 63-12.
Cal has now won 42 of its last 53 home games. With 50 points scored, the Bears improved to 62-5 all-time when scoring 30 or more points. The Bears are also 41-2 when scoring 40 or more and 15-0 when scoring 50 under Tedford. The last time Cal scored 50 or more points was a 63-12 victory against Presbyterian last season.
Zach Maynard finished the game completing 17 of 23 passes for 229 yards with an interception and a touchdown. Maynard also rushed six times for 39 yards. Maynard and Keenan Allen connected for their first touchdown of 2012 on the first play of the fourth quarter, good for 19 yards.
After hauling in five catches for 57 yards against Nevada last week, true freshman Chris Harper posted seven catches for 94 yards against Southern Utah. Harper is now Cal's leading receiver on the season with 12 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown, while Allen is second with 11 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown.
Isi Sofele was Cal's leading rusher on the day with 19 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. The 104 yards gave Sofele his sixth career 100-yard performance, which ties him for sixth all-time at Cal. The previous five 100-yard games all came in 2011 with the last one occurring in the regular season finale at Arizona State.
C.J. Anderson notched his ninth career rushing touchdown. The touchdown ended Cal's season-long drive of seven plays, 94 yards in 2:08. Today was the fifth time both Anderson and Sofele have scored a rushing TD in the same game, with the last occurrence happening at ASU last season.
Daniel Lasco rushed 77 yards for his first career touchdown, which was also the longest rush of the season for the Bears. The run gave Cal 500 yards of total offense (520) for the first time since last year against Presbyterian (581)
Keenan Allen extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 26, every game he's played at Cal. Allen ended the day with five catches for 69 yards and his first receiving touchdown of 2012. Entering the game ranked second in the Pac-12 and tied for 24th nationally in punt returns, Allen took a fourth-quarter punt back 69 yards for his first career punt return for a touchdown. On the season, Allen has returned six punts for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Marc Anthony picked off his fourth career interception, and first of 2012, and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown. The last time Cal intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD was Josh Hill against Utah last season. The 61-yarder is the longest since Mychal Kendricks' 68-yard pick-six at UCLA in 2009.
Jalen Jefferson garnered his first career tackle, and ended the day pacing the Bears with nine tackles. In the fourth quarter, Aaron Tipoti registered his first career fumble recovery. J.P. Hurrell and Brennan Scarlett secured their first career sacks, and Hurrell would go on to post three sacks (-15 yards) on the day. Nick Forbes (8) reached a new career high in tackles. Nathan Broussard earned his first career 0.5 tackle for loss.
Vincenzo D'Amato was a personal-best 3-for-3 on field goals today, making him 4-for-5 on the season. His 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter tied his career high (at Oregon, 2009). D'Amato also picked up a career-high 14 points on the day.
