PHILADELPHIA - California's pool play at the 2012 Collegiate Championship 7s began with a 21-10 victory over Navy Saturday at PPL Park.
Paul Bosco scored the Golden Bears' first try to finish three phases off the opening kickoff. Two minutes later, captain Seamus Kelly quick-tapped and drove into the try zone from four meters following a Navy penalty. Alex Aronson made both conversions before Navy's Seamus Siefring scored an unconverted try.
Navy threatened to counterattack out its own try zone at the end of the half but the Bears held their defensive shape, and Eakalafi Okusi, celebrating his 19th birthday, drove the ball carrier into touch to leave the halftime score at 14-5.
Cal kicked off the second half against the Midshipmen and Anthony Lombardo stole a floating pass by Navy. Danny Barrett soon bulled into the try zone but was whistled for a knock on. The Bears spoiled the ensuing scrum and Barrett seized his next opportunity, vaulting over defenders for Cal's third try, also converted by Aronson.
Navy's Ronald Helms scored a try in the right corner that Jack McAuliffe could not convert, and the Bears fought hard to deny the Midshipmen one more visit to the try zone.
Cal next faces Notre Dame live on NBC TV at 5:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. PT. The day ends with the Bears against Army at 7:03 p.m. ET / 4:03 p.m. PT.
