LOS ANGELES - California beat UCLA, 79-3, Saturday on the Bruins' North Athletic Field.
Nine Bears scored 12 tries, with two apiece from sophomore fullback Jake Anderson,
outside center and match-day captain Seamus Kelly, and sophomore flyhalf Paul Bosco.
Anderson converted eight times as Cal improved to 12-1 on the season.
UCLA fullback Tyler Pritchard kicked a 23-meter penalty in the 29th minute to
account for the Bruins' points as his team's 2012 record moved to 6-3.
It was the first collegiate start at flyhalf for Bosco, normally a scrumhalf who
played the final 20 minutes at No. 10 last week at Utah.
Starting scrumhalf Connor Ring said that despite their dozen tries, the Bears
stymied themselves too often in the backline after Cal's forwards set them up well
to attack.
"We had a great platform to do a lot more," Ring said.
Props Tanner Mohr and Lyall Davenport worked their way into the starting lineup as
props on either side of hooker Jake Wrobel. Mohr finished the match with his first
collegiate minutes at hooker in what may be a glimpse of a future role for him.
They were joined in the forwards by sophomore Patrick Coleman, who paired with junior
Brendan Daly at the locks, and sophomore Tiaan De Nysschen, who manned the back row
with Jack O'Beirne and Danny Barrett.
Reserve Mark Richter was a notable start at inside center, as was sophomore wing Max
Shaulis. True freshmen Eakalafi Okusi and Michael Bush came off the bench to finish
the match at inside center and flanker, respectively.
Together, the Bears showed continued improvement as they played through their
occasional mistakes.
"We did improve at playing our pattern, but the unforced errors are are still
something we need to eliminate," said Anderson.
In the reserve-grade contest following the Varsity XV, Cal defeated UCLA by the
score of 120-3.
Following the cancellation of March 14's match at Cal Maritime, the Bears next
travel to UC Davis on Saturday, March 17, for a match against the Aggies at 1 p.m.
on Russell Field.
The frosh-soph squad that would have faced the Keelhaulers next Wednesday gets
another chance to represent the Blue and Gold against UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, April
1, at 12 p.m. on the Lower East Field.
