LOS ANGELES - A slightly mixed Golden Bears lineup featuring 10 freshmen and sophomores scored 16 tries on UCLA Saturday and held firm on defense to record their 10th shutout of the season. Hat tricks were scored by wings James McTurk and Dustin Muhn, with Muhn moving to scrumhalf after freshman Paul Bosco was injured in the second half.
California, which emptied its bench after jumping out to a 57-0 halftime lead, played a man down for 10 minutes and finished the match with only 13 players on the field with the departures of Bosco and sophomore center Jared Braun, who also had to exit with an injury after the Bears had exhausted their substitution limit.
"We talked about building some depth and maintaining our performance," said Muhn, who has logged time at No. 9 in the past. "The way things ended, I'm not sure we did that for a full 80 minutes, but I'm proud of the forwards for repelling UCLA the way they did at the end."
Prop Jeremy Deterding said he and his teammates "wanted to be the first ones to the rucks and do a lot of counter-rucking. We weren't perfect every time, but we often had five or six guys at the breakdown, low and ready for whatever."
Co-captain Blaine Scully started at fullback and scored a pair of tries as Cal moved to 20-0 overall and 4-0 in divisional play. Nine Bears found the try zone, with sophomore forwards Brendan Daly and Jake Wrobel also notching a pair. Flyhalves James Bailes and Alex Aronson combined to connect on 10-of-16 conversion kicks.
In the reserve-grade match, the Bears defeated the Bruins, 53-5, as co-captain Jason Law made his return on the same field on which he was injured during January's Dennis Storer Classic.
The Bears next visit Claremont Colleges for a noon kickoff Sunday at Linde Athletic Field.
