ROCKLIN, Calif - California started a team of six freshmen and nine sophomores at Sierra College on Saturday as the Golden Bears defeated the Wolverines, 35-7, in wet and windy conditions.
Sophomore inside center Jared Braun scored a first-half hat trick and sophomore flyhalf Andre Coquillard connected on all five conversion kicks for the Bears, with tries added by sophomore prop Tanner Mohr and freshman No. 8 Jason Fry.
Sierra lock Jeremy Janke scored the Warriors' lone try in the 44th minute, converted by fullback Keenan Mayfield, as the second half saw Cal struggle more with the wind and a motivated Sierra team in its face.
Omitted from the lineup were several freshmen and sophomores who have started Varsity XVs matches this season, including Brendan Daly at lock and hooker Jake Wrobel in the forwards, and scrumhalf Paul Bosco, fullback Jake Anderson and All-America outside center Seamus Kelly in the backs.
"It was a hard-fought, physical match, and although we struggled a bit in the second half, we kept our heads together and pushed through it," said Fry, the only second-half try scorer for the Bears.
Fry led the Cal youth movement as match-day captain and was joined three more freshmen who came into the forwards as second-half replacements.
Braun formed a backline with Coquillard, Brad Harrington and Josh Tucker - all sophomores - with freshman Max Shaulis at the other wing.
"We won the coin toss and took the wind at our backs in the first half, which is what we wanted in conditions like this to get off to a good start," said Coquillard. "But as disorganized as we were at times in the second half, we're not as happy with the performance."
Saturday's match against the two-year school does not count in the Bears' official record, keeping Cal at 17-0 overall and 2-0 in divisional play.
The Bears have their passports ready for next week's trip to Vancouver, Canada, where Cal will carry an eight-point advantage into the final match of the "World Cup" series on Thursday, March 24, at Thunderbird Stadium. The Bears then visit Ellensburg, Wash., to face Central Washington on Saturday, March 26.
