California blanks Rutgers, 3-0, in Season Opener

California won their first game of the season, 3-0, against Rutgers Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, CA.
The Bears were led by senior forward Pooja Mehta who scored her first two goals of the season in the second half of the game. Scoring both with less than a minute and a half apart at 35:50 and 37:13, Mehta knocked in a 10-yard goal, assisted by senior Danya Sawyer to start the Bears' scoring. Mehta turned around to score her second goal of the day, an 8-yard shot, assisted by junior Nora Feddersen. Feddersen was not done offensively, as she finished the scoring for Cal at 50:04 on an assist by Alana Smith.
Senior Sharan Kalla entered the game at 60:40 and immediately made an impact with a defensive save off of Rutgers' Kamilah Lalani's shot.
Kelly Knapp recorded the shutout in goal for the Golden Bears with two saves, while Rutgers goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle stopped nine shots.
California outshot Rutgers, 17-7.
California will next face Ohio State at 4 pm, PT at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, CA.
