SUISUN CITY, Calif. - Juniors Jerry Smith and Adam Metzger each had three goals Saturday, and two other UC Berkeley players each had two, as the No.5 Golden Bears beat No. 17 UC Davis 15-1 in a men's water polo game played at Solano College.
The game was the season-opener for UC Davis, which will return to Solano College on Sunday to face No.2 Stanford. Andrew Stoddard and Eric Johnson each tallied a pair of goals for UC Berkeley, while Kevin Loscotoff had the Aggies' only score.
Smith scored barely more than 30 seconds into the game and then added another score in the waning moments of the quarter, helping UC Berkeley to a 4-0 lead at the end of the period. The Golden Bears, who led 6-0 at halftime, were up 7-0 midway through the third quarter before Loscotoff was able to get the Aggies on the board.
Stoddard, Johnson and Metzger each scored twice in the fourth quarter, as UC Berkeley tallied six scores to open the gap on the 9-1 lead it enjoyed after three periods. Goalie Kevin Ahasey had nine saves for the Golden Bears, while sophomore Gavin Glauser had 10 for the Aggies.
Smith and Metzger each scored their remaining goal in the third quarter.
"Our big thing against Cal and Stanford is to learn how to play defense better because it's always hard to have success on offense early in the season," said Aggie Coach Tom Elson. "While the score shows we didn't have much success offensively, I was pleased with some things we did defensively, especially from Glauser and Joel Higgins." Sunday's game against Stanford begins at noon.
