IRVINE, Calif. --- Sophomores Rob Arroyo (Foothill HS) and Spencer Dornin (Laguna Beach HS) each scored two goals as fourth-ranked California defeated 10th-ranked UC Irvine, 9-3, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo action at Anteater Pool in Irvine Saturday.
The Golden Bears (9-9 overall, 3-4 MPSF) built a 7-2 halftime lead and cruised to the win. One of Arroyo's goals was a two-pointer in the second quarter. Dornin and Albert Won gave Cal an early 2-0 lead before UCI's Tony Grosso scored with 1:14 left in the first quarter to cut the Bears' margin to 2-1 after one period.
Cal's Jerry Smith scored at 5:46 of the second quarter, then Dornin nailed his two-point goal with 3:17 left in the half for a 5-1 lead. The Anteaters' Jeff Powers closed the gap to 5-2 with the first of his two goals at 2:52 in the second period, but Eldad Hazor (1:21) and Joe Kaiser (:58) notched goals to give Cal its 7-2 margin at halftime.
Senior goalie Kevin Ahasey had nine saves for Cal, while senior Genai Kerr had 10 for UCI, which lost its fourth straight game and fell to 7-13 overall and 0-6 in the MPSF.
