Professor Oliver O’Reilly, a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, has served as the campus’ Faculty Athletics Representative since July 2022. O'Reilly is the father of former Cal student-athlete Anna O'Reilly (Cal ‘25), who served as a coxswain on the men's rowing team.
As the FAR, O'Reilly serves on the Academic Senate’s Faculty Athletics Council and the University Athletics Board. In addition, he participates in meetings with his counterparts from the other Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) members.
O'Reilly received his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). Subsequently, he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell. After spending two years as a postdoc at the Institut für Mechanik at ETH-Zürich , he joined the faculty in Mechanical Engineering at Cal in 1992.
O'Reilly has previously served as the Chair and Vice Chair of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate and as an Associate Dean for Graduate Education in the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society. In July 2022, he was appointed as the campus’s Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. He has coauthored over 100 archival journal articles, written three textbooks, coauthored a monograph, and is a co-inventor on two patents. He has also received multiple teaching award,s including UC Berkeley’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1999, the Pi-Tau-Sigma Professor of the Year Award in 2003 and the Tau-Beta-Pi Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award in 2013. He is also a recent recipient of the Berkeley Faculty Service Award.
