Defending NCAA Champions Sign Six Swimmers and One Diver
After serving as a graduate assistant coach and administrative assistant for two years, Kristen Cunnane was hired as the assistant coach for the California women's swimming program in May of 2007. A key contributor to the success of the Golden Bear program, Cunnane earned a promotion to associate head coach in December of 2011. She completed her fifth season as a full-time member of the staff in the 2011-12 season, which ended with Cal capturing its second straight NCAA team championship and third national title in four seasons.
Cunnane serves as the recruiting coordinator for Teri McKeever's program. In November of 2011, Cal signed arguably the best recruiting class in the nation thanks in large part to Cunnane.
Under her maiden name of Kristen Lewis, she was a UCLA All-American who earned a master's degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Education in the spring of 2006. She has also served as Cal's camp director since 2007.
Cunnane, who graduated from Campolindo High School in nearby Moraga, Calif., was a Bruins letterwinner from 2000-04 and was an All-American from 2002-04. A team captain as a senior, Cunnane ranked third-fastest in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.77) and fifth-fastest in the 100-yard butterfly (53.41) in UCLA's all-time top eight lists entering the 2008-09 season. During her career at UCLA, she served on the team mentor council and was named Most Improved Bruin for three of her four years. She also received the Bruin Braun award for her strength and passion in the weight room.
Also an Academic All-American, Cunnane majored in history and was an NCAA postgraduate scholar. A 2005 graduate of UCLA, Cunnane was an undergraduate assistant coach for her alma mater in the 2004-05 season.
Cunnane ended her swimming career at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Long Beach, Calif., in which she was a semifinalist in the 100- and 200-meter butterflies.
In the summer of 2007, Cunnane married her high school sweetheart, Scott Cunnane. The couple resides in Walnut Creek, Calif.
