A young tailback who has begun to evolve from a small, darting runner as a prep to a bigger, more physical back in college ... has gained over 10 pounds of muscle since he's arrived at Cal ... figures as Cal's No. 3 tailback heading into the fall, but will have to continue to develop if he wants to keep an edge on a heralded group of incoming freshmen ... showed some good signs early in spring drills, but a hamstring injury meant he was shelved for the majority of the practice sessions.
1998: came to Cal last year and redshirted while working on scout teams.
High School/Personal: Was the second-leading rusher in the state of California in 1997 with 3,039 yards on 260 carries (11.7 average) during the regular season...also led the state with 47 touchdowns...including playoffs, finished with 3,263 yards and 49 TDs...his yardage total ranked fourth in the country in '97, while his 312 points were second-best in the country and his 49 TDs tied for third best...had several amazing games, including an 18-carry, 461-yard game against Panorama City HS in which he scored seven TDs on runs of 71, 2, 57, 40, 44, 70 and 87 yards...also had a 466-yard 7-TD game, a 354-yard 6-TD game (9 carries), and a 288-yard 5-TD game (on eight carries)...had a streak of four straight games with seven TDs in each game...was the CIF Player of the Year in his division and was a member of the PrepStar Western Region team as the No. 14 running back prospect...also earned USA Today honorable mention All-America honors...gained 2,348 yards and scored 25 touchdowns as a junior, averaging 13.1 yards per carry...also had 118 tackles and five interceptions as a junior...chose Cal after considering UNLV and San Jose State ... mother is Anna Hanks ... born on June 14, 1980.
