BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal sophomore offensive guard John Romero, from St. Mary's HS
in Berkeley, will get his first collegiate start this Saturday
at Louisiana Tech. The 6-3, 315-pounder will replace junior
Yauger Williams, who is scheduled to undergo arthoscopic
surgery on Wednesday morning to repair any damage to a sprained
left knee. Williams has been bothered by the knee the past few
weeks, but the medical staff evaluated that he would continue
to have problems with the knee until surgery was performed . He
is scheduled to miss the next two to three weeks, but should be
able to return by mid-season.
Romero is one of the most powerful players on the team as he
bench presses 430 pounds. He strongly contended for starting
duties during the fall camp and head coach Tom Holmoe thinks he
is ready to assume the starting position. "John is a big,
strong force who has a bright future. He needs experience, pure
and simple and we believe he's ready to step in and do a great
job."
