Cal to Start Caleb Brown at Center
BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal head coach Tom Holmoe announced that junior Caleb Brown will make his first start of the 1997 season this Saturday when the Bears host Oregon State. Brown, who began the season with a hand injury, will move into the center spot with standout Jeremy Newberry moving over to take over the right guard spot in place of Kevin Swillis.
The pairing of Newberry and tackle John Welbourn on the same side should give the Bears a powerful force on the left side ofthe offensive line.
Cal's Bobby Shaw, who has been nursing some sore ribs, practiced on Thursday and appears ready to play on Saturday. He is just 6 catches away from breaking Cal's all-time career receiving record (currently held by Brian Treggs: 167 from 1988-91).
