A compact linebacker who can run extremely well and has a nose for the football...was originally recruited out of Curtis HS in New Orleans by Cal defensive coordinator Lyle Setencich when he was at Arizona State...spent the last two seasons at Vanderbilt, redshirting in 1995 and playing primarily on special teams last season...was a reserve linebacker on Vanderbilt's highly regarded defense that finished ranked No. 1 in the SEC in total defense last year...finished the '96 season with 3 tackles, including one unassisted stop...was a standout player at Curtis HS in New Orleans, one of the top prep programs in the nation...team had won 27 straight district and 12 consecutive state titles at the end of his senior year...was recruited by ASU, South Carolina and Rice out of high school...a devoted weight-lifter with a best of 390 pounds in the clean and jerk...has a strong interest in acting...parents are Rick and Gail Smith...born Sept. 15, 1976.
