Led by two victories apiece from senior Tom Shields and junior Jeremy Bagshaw, the No. 4-ranked California men's swimming and diving program upended No. 1-ranked Arizona, 159-134, Friday (Jan. 25) in a highly anticipated dual meet in Tucson, Ariz. The Golden Bears, winners of the 2011 and 2012 NCAA team titles, gave notice to the rest of the country that Cal is once again a national powerhouse.
Shields, the 2012 NCAA Swimmer of the Meet, captured the 100 (46.54) and 200 fly (1:46.02), while distance freestyler Bagshaw won the 500 (4:27.06) and 1000 free (9:17.06). The Bears started the meet with an impressive win in the 200 medley relay (1:27.59) - led by the swims of junior backstroker Tony Cox, senior breaststroker Trevor Hoyt, butterflyer Shields and junior freestyler Shayne Fleming
"It was impressive for us to come to Arizona, which has a very strong team and performs well at home, and come out with a win," said Cal coach Josh Prenot) and 1-2 in the 200 free (freshman Michael Haney, 1:39.05; and sophomore Will Hamilton, 1:39.32). We came out of the gates well, and that really helped get us going,"
The other individual winners for the Bears included freshman Josh Prenot in the 200 breast (1:59.68) and sophomore Seth Stubblefield in the 100 free (44.51).
Additional top swims for Cal included freshman Nick Dillinger placing second in the 100 free (45.02), and senior Nick Trowbridge and junior Marcin Tarczynski helping the Bears go 1-2-3 in the 200 back (in addition to winner Pebley) with times of 1:48.71 and 1:49.60, respectively. Sophomore Adam Hinshaw placed second to Bagshaw in the 500 free with a time of 4:28.46. Cal swam the final two events, the 400 IM and 400 free relay, as exhibitions
The Bears will next face Arizona State on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
