California Men's Tennis Heads to Battle in the Bay Classic and San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic
9/29/2026 1:23 PM | Men's Tennis
After opening its 2026-27 season, the California men's tennis team will split up to compete at two events this week: the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco and the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic in San Diego.
Battle in the Bay Classic
The Golden Bears will host the 17th annual Battle in the Bay Classic for the third time, welcoming student-athletes from more than 15 schools.
No. 59 Timofey Stepanov will lead Cal's contingent, joined by fellow seniors Alex Aney and Lenn Luemkemann and junior Paris Pouatcha. Stepanov is coming off a strong start to his fall campaign, highlighted by an upset of No. 21 Cooper Woestendick in the Round of 64 at the ITA All-American Championships.
Stepanov is the top seed in singles and, with Aney, the top seed in doubles. He is the first player to earn both No. 1 seeds at the Battle in the Bay since USC's Yannick Hanfmann in 2012. Hanfmann was coached at USC by Kris Kwinta, now Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis, during Kwinta's time as a Trojans assistant. Stepanov is also the first Bear to earn the top singles seed at the event since Florian Lakat in 2016.
Stepanov opens play against Arizona State's Ofek Shimanov at 11 a.m. Thursday.
San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic
Cal will send four players to San Diego: graduate student Melchior Delloye, sophomores Andrea Meduri and Leonardo Cattaneo, and freshman Benjamin Berger.
Meduri headlines the group as the only Bear still undefeated in singles this fall after going 4-0 at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup.
The Bears will face three opponents in a hidden dual format. They open against Washington at 3:30 p.m. Friday, take on a combined San Diego/San Diego State team at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and close against Grand Canyon at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
