Sagapolutele Throws For Career-High 413 yards and 3 TDs
BERKELEY - The California football team quickly took care of business against FCS school opponent Wagner in a 49-7 victory at California Memorial Stadium on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.
The Bears scored touchdowns on each of their four possessions, building a 29-0 lead in the first quarter and cruising the rest of the way.
"I think it was a good team win," Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi said.
The Bears (2-1, 1-0 ACC) outgained Wagner 626 yards to 198 and had 28 first downs, 18 more than the Seahawks.
Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 27 of 33 passes for a career-high 413 yards and three touchdowns.
"The biggest predictor of how we're going to perform is our preparation going into the game," Lupoi said. "So, he prepared at a high level. He played at a high level."
Others who played at a high level Saturday included running back Adam Mohammed and wide receivers Kyion Grayes and Chase Hendricks.
Mohammed gained 91 yards on 13 carries and had TD runs of 28 and 6 yards to cap Cal's first two drives. Mohammed, a transfer from Washington, has 1,001 rushing yards in his career.
He also added a 65-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.
That came after Grayes scored on an 80-yard reception. He took a short pass from Sagapolutele in the left flat, motored across the field and raced down the right sideline. Grayes got a key block late from fellow receiver Ian Strong and registered the first touchdown of his career at Cal.
Hendricks had nine receptions for 98 yards. Through three games, he leads Cal with 20 catches.
Safety Kingston Lopa, who had three interceptions in last week's 21-18 win at Syracuse, grabbed his FBS-leading fifth pick of the season early in the second half. He also had a team-high five tackles.
The Bears host traditional ACC power Clemson on Friday night in a nationally televised contest on ESPN.
"We had a game this week, had to take care of business," Cal defensive back Isaiah Crosby said. "We've got a game next week; we've got to do the same thing - take care of business."
