SANTA CLARA — In their final match of the Santa Clara Mission Classic, the California Golden Bears took on the host team, the Santa Clara Broncos. Following a thrilling five-set win over San Diego State on Saturday, the Bears were on the ropes early.
The Broncos and Bears exchanged the lead five separate times and tied another 10 times in the first set, and it was Santa Clara who walked away with the 26-24 win. For a Cal team that has spent most of the young season in control of each match, it was a prime opportunity for them to overcome some adversity, and that they did.
In the second set, they jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead, with the lone tie of the set coming at 1-1. It was the Bears all the way as they went on to win 25-19. The third set may have been the most intense that Cal has been a part of all season, as there were 17 ties and eight lead changes. However, throughout its entirety, Cal was getting big play after big play from redshirt sophomore Grace Agolli and Illinois transfer Cari Bohm.
When the fourth set rolled around, if you blinked, you may have missed Cal's scorching start. Before the gym knew it, the Bears were up 21-6 before Santa Clara showed signs of life.
In the end, Cal finished the job, winning 25-12 and giving them a 2-0 record at the tournament.
