6 Cal Rowing Alums To Race On Future Olympic Course
Six former California men's rowers will get early experience on the LA28 Olympic rowing course this weekend as international crews gather for the 2026 Long Beach Elite and Community Invitational, hosted by USRowing. The regatta will feature elite crews from the United States, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand and Norway.
The 1500-meter sprint races will take place October 9-10 at Marine Stadium in Long Beach and will welcome athletes from across various levels of the sport as part of the lead-up to the 2028 Summer Games. Live results for the event can be found on Regatta Central.
Gus Rodriguez ('23) will represent Team USA in the men's pair this weekend. Rodriguez is coming off his gold-medal finish in the men's four at the 2026 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam this past August. He helped the United States finish tied for second in the final gold-medal count at the premier international event. Rodriguez also rowed in the bronze medal-winning mixed eight crew for the U.S., making him one of just 23 athletes at the competition to take home two medals.
A trio of Golden Bears – Angus Dawson, ('25) Harry Manton ('25) and Jack Robertson ('21) – will represent Team Australia this weekend in Long Beach. 2024 Paris Olympian Roberston will compete in the men's pair while two-time Olympian Dawson and Manton will be a part of the mixed eight event. The three rowers are coming off their recent senior worlds outing in which Dawson won silver in the men's pair and Manton and Robertson helped the Aussies claim bronze in the men's eight.
For New Zealand, Ollie Maclean ('23) is entered into the men's pair event this weekend. 2024 Paris Olympics silver-medalist Maclean made his return to international competition for the first time since his Summer Games appearance this past August at senior worlds. He helped New Zealand claim sixth place in the men's four and finish second in the B final of the men's eight.
Josh Knight ('26) will compete as a single sculler for Great Britain in Long Beach. Knight made his World Rowing Championship debut this past summer as a double sculler for the Brits, helping his country take fifth in the event.
