No. 19 Bears Advance To NCAA Super Regionals
Cal Routs No. 16 Washington In Seattle
SEATTLE – It may have taken a bit more of a windy road than usual this season, but the No. 19 California women's tennis team is right back where it's used to being this time of year – the Super Regionals of the NCAA Championship.
The Golden Bears silenced the crowd at Bill Quillian Tennis Center with a dominant 4-0 victory over No. 16 Washington in Seattle on Saturday, punching their ticket to the Round of 16 at No. 1 Georgia next Friday at 1 p.m. PT. It marks the fifth consecutive season Cal has reached this round of the NCAA Championship.
"We've had a lot to adjust to this year and have had to figure things out as we go," Cal head coach Amanda Augutus said. "We felt good about our chances today and really stepped up."
The Bears (15-8) won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the dual after victories by fourth-ranked
Jessica Alsola and
Mao Mushika and
Greta Greco Lucchina and
Lan Mi. Cal won all three singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing by junior
Berta Passola Folch over the Huskies' McKenna Koenig. Alsola and Mi also notched victories.
"I thought our doubles point was pretty critical," Augustus said. "We came out really aggressively and set the tone, and I think it just carried over. This team really wants to see how far they can go, and I think we have the talent. Hopefully, we are putting it together at the right time."
The Bears are consistently among the elite teams in college women's tennis but took a little longer than usual to find their footing this season. They dropped out of the national rankings in February before slowly climbing toward the top once again.
Friday will mark the second straight year Cal has played at Georgia in the Super Regionals. Last year, the Bears fell 4-2 in Athens to the Bulldogs.
