PITTSBURGH, Pa – The California lacrosse team traveled east Saturday looking to secure its first ACC win of the season but just fell short to Pitt, 7-6.
The Bears (2-4, 0-3 ACC) built a strong lead as Emily Moes, Courtney Wong and Avery Hoeft - who was the leading scorer of Saturday's game - all scored goals before halftime. Cal went into the half with a 4-0 lead but was unable to stop Pitt's offense in the second half.
After the Bears established a 5-1 advantage, Pitt scored five unanswered goals to surge in front 6-5 with just under six minutes to play. But Cal didn't go away, as Hoeft notched the equalizer with 3:47 remaining to tie the game back up at 6-6. However, Pitt scored the game-winning goal just 43 seconds later to close out the game..
Looking ahead, Cal will travel to Kent State for a nonconference game on Monday at 9 a.m. PT.
