Cal Earns First ACC Win

Bears Open Home Slate In Winning Fashion

BERKELEY – The California softball team (17-4) notched its first-ever ACC win in their home opener against Boston College, 5-3, on Friday at the Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, California.

The Golden Bears won their 11th consecutive game in the series opener against the Eagle, racking up 12 hits and two home runs.

The Eagles took the lead in the top of the first inning behind an RBI double by Jordan Stephens to tack on the game's first run.

Cal responded later in the frame with a two-run home run from Acacia Anders, her first of the season, to give the Bears a 2-1 lead heading into the second inning.

In the top of the second, pitcher Miranda De Nava quickly retired the side after recording three consecutive outs, including one strikeout. Mia Phillips found the gap in center field for a double to get the Bears started at the bottom of the second. Phillips advanced to scoring position in the next at-bat when Nailyn Marshall got on base with a base hit.

Mika Lee executed a textbook bunt to bring a runner home, extending the lead to 3-1 heading into the third.

The Bears continued to pressure the Eagles after adding another run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Kaylee Pond opened the frame with a double to center field, which was followed by another double from Tianna Bell to plate the runner.

After loading the bases with one out in the top of the fourth, the Eagles forced the Bears to change pitchers. The Eagles scored on a fielder's choice to cut their deficit to 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Bell launched a solo home run to center field, her fourth of the season, as the Bears took a 5-2 lead.

The Eagles tacked on a run in the top of the seventh inning but left two runners on base as Cal secured the victory.

Ashanti McDade earned her third win of the season after pitching 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.
