Cal Wraps San Diego Crew Classic
Bears Place Third In All Four Races
MISSION BAY – The No. 8 California Golden Bears women's rowing team placed up the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay on Sunday morning finishing in third place in all four A finals. All four races featured No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Washington.
In the final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, Cal's V8+ along with Washington and Texas formed the lead pack off the start with the Bears taking a slight lead until the Huskies and Longhorns broke free by the midway point. Cal stayed within a boat length up until that point but were unable to maintain contact during the second half of the race but finished comfortably in third place in a time of 6:24.933 – five seconds behind winner Texas.
In the final of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, Cal's 2V8+, Texas and Washington broke away from the pack off the start but the Longhorns and Huskies separated themselves by the 500-meter mark with the Bears in control of third place with open water ahead of the rest of the field. Cal stayed within striking distance but were unable to make up ground and finished in third place in a time of 6:36.839.
In the final of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, Cal's V4+ took a half-boat lead in the opening first few hundred meters with Texas and Washington trailing. The Longhorns and Huskies pushed past the Bears and went ahead by open water over the second half of the race. Cal was unable to cut into the deficit but sat in control of third place finishing in a time of 7:21.322.
In the Golden Bears' last race of the day for the Carley Copley Cup, an event they won last year, Cal stuck with Texas and Washington to form the lead pack in the first few hundred meters. The Longhorns pulled ahead by open water by the 500-meter mark with the Bears and Huskies battling it out for second place. Cal and Washington stayed nearly even until the Huskies made a push and pulled ahead by a half-boat length for second place. The Bears took third in a time of 6:50.343 just two seconds behind Washington.
"I'm disappointed that we didn't get a boat on the podium this weekend, but the team did a great job of assessing what needed to change from Saturday to Sunday and then actually making the changes," Cal head coach
Al Acosta said. "The team raced hard today and will be faster in two weeks when we have our home opener against Virginia and Syracuse."
NEXT UP
The Bears will take next weekend off before hosting Virginia and Syracuse at the Redwood Shores on April 12.
