Cal Has Successful First Day At San Diego Crew Classic
Bears Send All Four Boats To A Finals
MISSION BAY – The No. 8 California Golden Bears women's rowing team had a strong showing in the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay on Saturday sending its V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and 3V8+ to Sunday's A finals as each boat finished in second place in its respective heat to advance.
In the second heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the Golden Bears' V8+ and Washington jumped out in front of the pack early. The Huskies took an open-water lead by the 500-meter mark, however the Bears sat comfortably in second place with several boats of open water ahead of the rest of the field. Cal didn't let Washington extend its lead much further and finished in second in a time of 6:20.214.
In the second heat of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, Cal's V4+ went out in front early taking a two-seat lead over Washington in the first few hundred meters. The Huskies made a move and took a half-boat lead over the Bears by the halfway mark. Washington extended its lead to open water over the second half of the race, but Cal was never threatened for second place and cruised to the finish line in a time of 7:23.234.
In the second heat of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, the Bears' 2V8+ and Washington formed the lead pack early in the race separating themselves from the field in a battle for first place. The Huskies eventually took a slight lead and Cal was not able to make up any ground and finished in second with a time of 6:32.246.
The prelims of the Carley Copley Cup ended up being the most exciting race of the day for the Bears. The 3V8+ took an early lead after the first 10 strokes going ahead by two seats over Washington and Texas. Texas took back two seats to pull even by the 500-meter mark and eventually took a bow to stern lead halfway through the race with the Bears holding a three-seat lead over the Huskies in second place. Washington pulled even with Cal and the two stayed neck and neck for the remainder of the race and the Bears were able edge out the Huskies by less than a second for second place in a time of 6:40.023.
