DURHAM, N.C. – The California lacrosse team could not keep up with No. 13 Duke in the second half of a 13-4 road loss at Koskinen Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Bears fell to 4-6 overall and 0-5 in ACC play with the loss. Duke improved to 7-3 (3-2).
Freshman Ashleigh Masterson put Cal on the board first in the opening two minutes of the game, with an assist by Courtney Wong, and the Bears found themselves trailing narrowly, 5-3, at halftime.
The Blue Devils pulled away in the third quarter, scoring the first three goals out of the intermission to extend their advantage to 8-3. Emily Moes was able to find the back of the net just 13 seconds before the end of the third period, but Cal was held scoreless in the fourth while Duke added five more goals.
Cal will stay on the East Coast to face Winthrop on Sunday. The nonconference contest begins at 9 a.m. PT in Rock Hill, South Carolina and will be streamed on ESPN+.
