ROCK HILL, S.C.- After a tough loss to Duke on Friday, the California lacrosse team bounced back on the East Coast with a decisive 20-11 victory over Winthrop on Sunday morning.
The Bears quickly gained momentum after Kennedy Mason scored the game's first goal just over a minute into the game. Cal extended its lead to 4-0 with goals by Ashleigh Masterson, Emily Moes and Courtney Wong. The Bears led 7-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bears held a 9-4 lead early in the second quarter before Winthrop held them scoreless for nearly 16 minutes to tie the game at 9-9. Annette Ciupek ended the Eagles' streak with a crucial goal to put the Bears back in front 10-9 with 6:58 remaining in the third quarter, and that led to a 4-0 run with goals also by Masterson, Mason and Jane Middleton to widen the gap to 13-9.
The Eagles cut it to 13-11 with 1:23 left in the third quarter but Cal's defense held them without a goal for the remainder of the game.
Moes finished with a career-high six goals, which ties Mason for a season-high for the Bears this season. Mason added five goals and Brynn Gallagher registered her first career-goal for Cal. This victory marked the first time since 2017 that Cal scored 20 goals in a game, a record previously set against Saint Mary's.
Cal will return to ACC play at No. 15 Clemson next Sunday.
