Lan Mi clinched for the second time - including the season opener - in the win over the Mustangs.
BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team claimed its sixth consecutive victory when senior
Lan Mi clinched a 6-1 rout of No. 60 SMU on a windy Sunday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Â
The Golden Bears improved their record to 7-4 (4-0 ACC). SMU fell to 8-9 (2-4 ACC).
Â
Cal had a strong start to capture the doubles point. The 47th-ranked pair of
Jessica Alsola and
Mao Mushika defeated SMU's 45th-ranked Sophie Llewellyn and Ellie Pittman 6-1 on court one and then Mi and
Greta Greco Lucchina clinched the point with a 6-3 triumph over 64th-ranked Kayla Schefke and Arianna Stavropoulos on court three.
Â
The Bears reeled off three straight-set wins in a row to clinch the overall win.
Naomi Xu started the streak with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Millie Skelton, followed by
Berta Passola Folch topping Kayla Schefke 6-2, 6-3 on court five to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Mi, ranked 86th, bested Pittman 6-2, 6-3 on court three to secure the overall win. The Bears went on to win two of the last three matches to complete the 6-1 score.
Â
Cal improved its home record to 6-1 on Sunday, after posting a big road win at No. 27 Stanford on Saturday.
Â
"Today felt like a huge sense of urgency in singles and doubles," Mi said. "After yesterday, all of us were so happy, I felt it wouldn't mean anything if we didn't back it up with another good, solid win today.
Â
"The team is feeling more and more confident after each match that we win, especially after the big matches that we win. For me, coming into March and April, I feel I have to also play better and better now as we play more matches."
Â
Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said, "I was pleased to see us – two days in a row – come out really strong on all three courts in doubles. We've been working really hard at it, and it's been nice to see it pay off in match play on all the courts. We maintained the momentum in singles. We did a good job of closing out the matches, even though we had to readjust a bit and are not familiar with SMU. I'm just really proud of the progress of this team.
Â
"It was a bit windy today and I'm glad we got the match in before the rain comes later. And we had a great crowd out here despite not being very warm. We appreciate having good support on and off the court, and I'm excited to carry on another week with this group."
Â
Cal embarks on its final road trip of the regular season when it heads to the East Coast for four matches, starting with a March 21 contest at third-ranked Virginia.
