BERKELEY – The California lacrosse team returned to California Memorial Stadium for its second ACC game of the season and fell to No. 10 Virginia 20-9 on Saturday.
The Bears (2-3, 0-2 ACC) got off to a strong start, with junior Alyssa Studdert and leading scorer Kennedy Mason scoring the first two goals of the game to establish a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. But the Cavaliers exploded for seven of the next eight goals to close out the opening period.
Cal didn't go away easily, however. The Bears scored three of the first four goals of the second quarter, including back-to-back scores by sophomore Emily Moes, to stay within striking distance at 8-6 with 7:52 left in the first half.
Virginia closed out the half with a goal and then dominated the third quarter, outsourcing the Bears 9-0 to take command.
Moes added an assist while Mason and sophomore Jane Middleton also had two goals apiece.
The Bears play their first road ACC contest ever next Saturday when they travel to Pitt for a 9 a.m. PT first draw.
