TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 21 California softball team clinched two victories on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday, defeating Utah (10-4) then Maryland (13-3) in run-rule fashion at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The Golden Bears (3-1) totaled 23 runs, 20 hits, 18 RBIs and three home runs.
Lagi Quiroga had herself a day with two home runs in a single game.
Game 1: Cal – 10 | Utah – 4
After a scoreless opening inning, the Bears put five runs on the board in the second. With the bases loaded,
Kayli Counts forced a walk to bring a runner home. In the next at-bat, another run scored thanks to a wild pitch by the Utes.
Nailyn Marshall reached second as two runners crossed home plate.
Mika Lee doubled to center field to bring the fifth runner across home plate.
After the Utes cut its deficit after the fourth inning (6-4), Cal added five more runs to pull away due to several key errors by Utah. The Bears loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth.
Ryann Orange forced a walk to bring a runner home. Cal added additional runs after a sacrifice fly and a pair of errors from the Utes en route to securing the victory.
Game 2: Cal – 13 | Maryland - 3
In the first at-bat, Quiroga launched her first home run of the day to straight-away center field. Marshall tallied her first homer of the season to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Right afterward, Quiroga recorded another solo home run, her second of the game.
Cal continued to pour it on the Terps behind a six-run fourth inning led by
Mia Phillips with an RBI triple. Phillips made it home after
Alyssa Herrera executed a textbook bunt. Quiroga drove in two runs with a base hit up the middle to extend the lead (7-0).
Elon Butler put the finishing touches on the game with her first home run of the year, a three-run blast to give Cal the commanding lead in the top of the fifth inning.
In the first start of her collegiate career,
Miranda De Nava earned her second win of the season. De Nava held the Utes scoreless through three innings and only surrendered four hits throughout the game.
