LONG BEACH – The California softball team (5-2) defeated Kansas (2-5), 2-1, in walk-off fashion, to win its second straight game during the Wilson Invitational at LSBU Softball Complex in Long Beach, Calif.
The Golden Bears fell behind early after the Jayhawks put a run on the board during the top of the first inning. The Bears evened the score in the second inning after
Mia Phillips brought a runner home on a base hit to left field. Phillips was out after attempting to reach second on the play.
The score remained even until the seventh inning as neither team could put a run on the board. Kansas had a chance to take the lead in the fourth inning with two runners on base and one out.
Anna Reimers took the mound and forced two straight outs, including one strikeout, to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Phillips stepped up to the plate with two runners on base and a rowdy crowd of 1,050 behind her. Phillips lined a ground ball straight up the middle, bouncing off the pitchers' gloves as the second baseman forced the out at second but couldn't turn the double play. With aggressive base running,
Xiomei Geluz scored from second base to secure the walk-off victory.
Reimers earned her first win of the season after pitching 3.2 innings, earning five strikeouts and surrendering two hits.
