Cal Goes 3-0 In Wilson Invitational

Bears Top Iowa State In Long Beach

LONG BEACH – The California softball team (6-2) earned its third-straight victory after defeating Iowa State (4-5), 4-1, to conclude the Wilson Invitational on Sunday at LBSU Softball Complex in Long Beach, Calif.

The Golden Bears got off to a hot start by scoring all four of their runs in the first three innings. Acacia Anders contributed to the first run after hitting an RBI double to right field. In the bottom of the second inning, Nailyn Marshall hit a double to left field to bring two runners across the plate while advancing to third, to give the Bears a 3-0 lead through two innings of action.

In the third inning, Kaylee Pond knocked in a base hit to right field to tack another run on the board as a runner raced home from second base.

Cal's defense put on a clinic after holding Iowa State scoreless through five innings. The Cyclones loaded the bases in the top half of the fifth inning, but stellar pitching by freshman Miranda De Nava got the Bears out of the tough jam to retire the side.

Iowa State broke its scoreless outing in the sixth inning after a solo home run by Jessie Clemons to cut its deficit to three heading into the final inning.

De Nava pitched a complete game, earning four strikeouts and surrendering three hits and one run en route to securing her third win on the season.

UP NEXT
Cal will head to Cathedral City to participate in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic beginning on Thursday against Oregon. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT.
