LONG BEACH – The California softball team earned its fourth win of the season after defeating Oregon State, 3-1, in the first game of the Wilson Invitational at LBSU Softball Complex in Long Beach, Calif.
Ryann Orange had a stellar performance on the mound after throwing a complete game while racking up nine strikeouts, allowing three hits and surrendering one run. Orange was nearing a no-hitter until giving up a base hit late in the seventh.
The game was scoreless through four innings until the Golden Bears struck first in the fifth. With a runner on first and second,
Mika Lee stepped to the plate with one out. Lee dropped a bunt, forcing the Beavers to make an error on the throw to first base.
Kayli Counts scored from second, while
Lagi Quiroga advanced to third.
The action picked back up in the seventh inning, where three runs were scored. In the top of the seventh,
Holly Medina was up to bat with a runner at second base. Medina executed a textbook bunt, forcing the Beavers into another error on the throw to first.
Mia Phillips raced around the bases to score on the play while Medina reached second.
Lagi Quiroga helped Cal extend its lead after knocking in an RBI single to give the Bears a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
After ending Orange's no-hit bid, the Beavers put pressure on the Bears after loading the bases. With one out, Oregon State got on the board after hitting an RBI single. Shortly afterward, the Bears forced the Beavers into a double play to seal the victory.

Cal will play a night game against Kansas tomorrow at 7 p.m. PT in Long Beach at the LBSU Softball Complex.
