Greco Lucchina Claims NCAA Singles Berth
SEATTLE, Wash. – Greta Greco Lucchina added to her postseason schedule when the California women's tennis sophomore won a playoff match at the ITA West Sectional Championships on Sunday to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship.
Â
The 125th-ranked Golden Bear defeated Stanford's 58th-ranked Caroline Driscoll 6-1, 6-4 in the playoff at the Nordstrom Tennis Center to advance. Greco Lucchina had previously qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship with partner
Mao Mushika. Cal has produced five entrants to the NCAA individual championships with four in singles – Greco Lucchina, Mushika,
Berta Passola Folch and
Naomi Xu – and one pair in doubles – Mushika and Greco Lucchina. Two of the Bears – Greco Lucchina and Passola Folch– punched their tickets to NCAA singles at the ITA sectional tournament, while Mushika qualified for NCAA singles at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in San Diego.
Â
"I'm pretty happy," Cal interim head coach
Kris Kwinta said. "There's a lot of talent on this team and aiming it in the right direction is the key. (Assistant coach) Stephanie (Kusano Wallace) was able to guide Mao in San Diego, and (assistant coach) Jean (Lozano) helped Greta and Berta in Seattle, and it was amazing to see we beat some tough opposition. The Bears are developing good styles for their games and developing good mindsets. Most importantly, you can see the shift in the team's mindset when they step on the court. Lenny Wiersma (a senior mental performance consultant) from the Cameron Institute is helping us with that, as a head coach that's what I want to see – positive change and continuing to add to the talent that they have."
Â
Greco Lucchina's playoff match was Cal's last at ITA sectionals. With qualification for NCAA singles already determined for the four semifinal winners – including Passola Folch – the semifinals and final were not played.
Â
The NCAA individual championships will take place from Nov. 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
