BERKELEY– The California field hockey team picked up its third straight win Friday afternoon topping Kent State 3-1 at Underhill Field.
The Golden Bears' three goals came off three different sticks, the first of which went to
Liz Klompmaker. After a scoreless first quarter the freshman scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season early in the second quarter to give Cal a 1-0 lead. Freshman Pauline Lingnua and graduate student
Canisha van Duyn assisted on the play.
Late in the third quarter the Bears (3-0) scored what would be the game-winner as junior
Olivia Sharratt found van Duyn cutting in front of the goal and made the perfect pass inside. Van Duyn buried her first goal of the season in the bottom left corner of the net to extend Cal's lead to 2-0. Through three quarters the Bears held the Golden Flashes (0-4) to just one shot.
With just over six minutes to go sophomore
Holly Pears scored her second goal in as many games with senior
Sophie Everett setting up the opportunity. It was Everett's second assist of the week.
Kent State avoided its first shutout of the season with under four minutes to go, getting a goal from Agustina Florio to make it a 3-1 final score.
Junior goalkeeper
Tina Jolly made her third straight start for the Bears and had two saves in the win.
Cal returns to Underhill Field next Sunday, Sep 15 for a matchup with UC Davis at 3 p.m. PT.
