Cal Falls In Home Opener To Cornell, 13-9

Nine Different Golden Bears Score One Goal Apiece

BERKELEY – Nine Cal players scored but none more than once in a 13-9 loss to Cornell in the Golden Bears' home opener Saturday on a cold afternoon at California Memorial Stadium.

Mya Wang picked up one of Cal's nine goals and also registered a game and career-high three assists to lead Cal with a game-high-tying four points, while Maya Lawliss and Avery Hoeft each had one goal and one assist. Cal's other goal scorers were Josie Lillquist, Kennedy Mason, Quinnlyn Mason, Amanda Morse, Caroline Roxas and Courtney Wong, while Kate Rothman picked up an assist.

Katie Castiello and Maggie Pons each produced a hat trick and an assist for the Big Red. Shannon Brazier, Amanda Cramer and Josie Vogel added a pair of goals each, while Bridget Babcock scored once. Cramer also had an assist.

Ellie Horner had 16 saves and nine goals allowed in between the pipes for Cornell, while Alicia Souliotis recorded 12 saves and 13 goals allowed while playing the first complete game of her career at goalie for the Bears.

Cal dug itself an early hole with Cornell scoring three times before the contest was five minutes old on goals from Castiello (14:36), Pons (12:47) and Babcock (10:17) with Pons assisting on Castiello's goal and Cramer on Babcock's.

Quinnlyn Mason (9:16) and Morse (6:40) traded goals with Pons (7:51) and Castiello (0:51) to keep the Bears within three at the end of the opening period. Lawliss and Rothman assisted on the Mason and Morse goals.

The second quarter featured just a single goal for each team with Lillquist (7:08) scoring on an assist by Wang to answer an early-quarter goal by Vogel (14:02). Souliotis shined in the net for the Bears during the quarter with six of her 10 first-half saves as the Big Red outshot the Bears in the second, 17-4.

Cornell took control of the game early in the third quarter by quickly extending a 6-3 halftime advantage to 10-3. Brazier (12:59) started the run and was followed by Cramer (11:17), Pons on an assist from Castiello (10:05) and Vogel (9:43). Lawliss got one goal back at 8:25 but Cramer answered at 5:21 to keep the Big Red's seven goals in front. The Bears crawled to within 11-6 when Avery Hoeft recorded both her first assist and goal in quick succession, feeding Kennedy Mason (4:15) from behind the net before getting her own goal on an assist from Wang (3:38) before Castiello got the final goal of the quarter (2:32).

Cal dominated the fourth quarter but was unable to make up the six-goal difference at the end of three. The Bears scored three of the four goals in the fourth, while registering advantages of 11-3 in shots and 10-1 in shots on goal. Neither team scored for more than six minutes in the fourth before Roxas broke the ice on an assist from Wang with 8:54 to go. Wang picked up her own goal just over a minute later with 7:48 to go in the game to cut the Big Red advantage to 12-8. But Brazier answered with a goal just 33 seconds later at 7:15 and Cal was only able to score once the rest of the way on a Courtney Wong goal at 4:18.

Cornell finished with a sizeable advantage in free position shots, making five of seven attempts while Cal was just 2-of-9. The Bears were a big winner in the circle with a 17-9 advantage in draw controls. Cornell was called for 31 fouls, while Cal committed just 14.

"Overall, we did some really positive things today," head coach Jennifer Wong said. "I think we took some really big strides especially on the defensive end. We gave up a few lapses at the beginning of the first and third quarters, which is kind of what did us in. But in general, there are some really positive things as we move forward. While we didn't end up winning the game today, I do think it was a really important next step in our growth as a team as we move forward to the season."

Cal (1-4, 0-1 Pac-12) will be out of game action until hosting Howard in a non-conference game at California Memorial Stadium on March 9 (3 pm PST).

"It was exciting to play in the first home game of the season," Lawliss said. "Having nine different scorers speaks to the depth of our team. We are moving in the right direction and I'm looking forward to the next game."

"It was a great experience to play in my first home opener and see how much our team has grown in the past few games," Wang added. "The pieces are starting to come together, and I am excited to see the success we will have moving forward."
