Golden Bears Start Strong Again But Outscored 12-1 Over Final Three Periods

BERKELEY – Cal jumped out to an early lead for the third time in its first five games of the season but despite registering three of the game's first four goals fell 16-5 to UC Davis on Saturday at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears also previously this year after the opening quarter against San Diego State and early in the second at No. 11/11 Virginia.

Amanda Morse got Cal started against the Aggies with her team-leading 10th goal of the season at the 12:24 mark of the first quarter. After a goal by UC Davis' Kendall Seifert tied the contest at 1-1 the Bears answered with back-to-back tallies from Megan Mix (8:36) and Maya Lawliss (6:54) to take a 3-1 lead. But UC Davis came back with three consecutive goals in a span of just under four-and-half minutes to go in front, 4-3, with the goals from Ella Brislin (6:31), Natalie Wilson (3:26) and Alex Agnew (2:02). Quinnlyn Mason picked up her first goal of the campaign with 0:16 to go in the first period on an assist by Kaia Evans to tie the score at 4-4 after the first 15 minutes.

But the Bears would be outscored the rest of the way, 12-1. Nikki Zaccaro's 56th career goal with 1:31 to go in the third period was the only time Cal would find the back of the net over the final 45 minutes of action.

UC Davis scored four times in the second period to take an 8-4 lead at halftime and extended its lead to 14-5 after three quarters by scoring six more times in the third before adding its' final two goals over the game's last 15 minutes.

Brislin led the way for the Aggies with a game-high four goals and also added an assist, while Agnew matched her game-high-tying five points on three goals and two assists. Mia Lawrence also had a hat trick and four points with three goals and one assist. The trio was among eight different Aggies to score with Kendall Seifert (two goals, one assist) and Grace Gebhardt (one goal, two assists) each adding three points, while Regan Arkless, Natalie Markman and Wilson had one goal apiece.

Cal (0-5) will be out of game action for nearly two weeks before opening Pac-12 play at Stanford on Fri., March 11 (2 pm PT). The game will be televised live by Pac-12 Networks.
