BERKELEY - Cal looks for its second straight win Saturday when the Golden Bears host No. 15/13 Washington.
Cal is ranked first in the Pac-12 in rushing offense (196.9) and passing defense (166.4). Cal last led the conference in rushing offense in 2005 and passing defense in 2011.
Jordan Kunaszyk is second in the Pac-12 and eighth in the nation in total tackles per game (12.3), while he leads the nation in solo tackles (8.4).
Patrick Laird scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) for the second time in his career and totaled a career-high 241 all-purpose yards at Oregon State. He needs 423 rushing yards to become the third Cal rusher in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in multiple seasons (Marshawn Lynch, Russell White) with White hitting the mark three times (1990-92) and Lynch twice (2005-06).
Cal is allowing 24.0 points, 154.4 rushing yards and 166.4 passing yards per game. Those numbers are all significantly lower than the last season before Justin Wilcox arrived in 2006 (42.6, 272.8, 245.4).
Cal's 7.0 sacks and 12.0 tackles for loss at Oregon State were season bests and the most since 9.0 sacks and 12.0 TFL against Washington State in 2017.
Chase Garbers posted career highs in passing yards (226), rushing yards (54) and total yards (280) at Oregon State. He also had his career long pass (55) and run (20), while his three passing touchdowns tied a personal best (Idaho State, 2018).

Shut-Down Defense
Cal's defense has allowed opponents under 300 yards of total offense three times and under 350 yards of total offense in six of seven games.
Cal's defense allowed a season-low 241 total yards against Oregon State – the lowest ever under head coach Justin Wilcox and the least by a Cal defense since giving up 224 against Washington State in 2011.
The Bears have allowed its first seven opponents to score on only 22 of 100 combined drives (22.0%). The 22 scoring drives have resulted in 15 touchdowns and seven field goals.
Cal is allowing 320.9 yards of total offense and 24.0 points per game, which are its best marks since 2010 (319.1) and 2011 (24.2).
The Bears rank first in the Pac-12 and ninth nationally in pass defense (166.4).
Cal's 7.0 sacks and 12.0 tackles for loss at Oregon State were the most since the Bears boasted 9.0 sacks and 12.0 TFL against Washington State in 2017. The sacks are second-most by a Pac-12 team this year and tied for the fifth-highest nationally.
Tevin Paul had a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss vs. the Beavers and Trey Turner III collected a career-high 10 tackles.

Dynamic Duo At Inside Linebacker
Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunaszyk are Cal's leading tacklers this season with 86 for Kunaszyk and 75 for Weaver. Kunaszyk has notched double-digit tackles in each of the last six games while Weaver had four straight earlier in the campaign and picked up his fifth of the season with 10 last Saturday at Oregon State. Kunaszyk boasted a career-best 22 tackles vs. UCLA, which equaled the most by a Cal player since Jerrott Willard collected 22 against USC in 1993. He is on pace for 147 this season, which would be the most since Willard finished with 147 in 1993.
Kunaszyk leads the nation in solo tackles (59) and solo tackles per game (8.4), while has also contributed a team-leading 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and three forced fumbles (0.5 per game), which ranks tied for sixth nationally and tied for first in the Pac-12. He is also second in the Pac-12 and seventh in the nation in total tackles (86) and second in the Pac-12 and eighth nationally in total tackles per game (12.3). Kunaszyk recorded his 200th career tackle against UCLA and has 211 in his career.
Weaver set a career high with 14 tackles vs. North Carolina and Oregon. He is tied for fourth in the Pac-12 and tied for 10th nationally in solo tackles (6.3) as well as fourth in the Pac-12 and tied for 19th nationally in total tackles (10.7) per game.
Kunaszyk and Weaver have combined to garner over a third of the team's tackles (33.7%, 161-of-477). Their combined average of 14.7 solo tackles per game leads the nation.

Other Individuals In Defensive Rankings
Jaylinn Hawkins ranks tied for 12th in the nation and shares the Pac-12 lead with three others in interceptions with three. He is one of six Pac-12 players to have two interceptions in a game this season with a pair in the season opener against North Carolina before picking off his third pass of 2018 at BYU. Ashtyn Davis and Traveon Beck rank tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with two interceptions and tied for seventh with 0.29 picks per game. Camryn Bynum leads the squad with six pass breakups including a career-and game-high four pass in the season-opener vs. North Carolina. After adding PBUs at BYU and Oregon State, and an interception at Arizona, he ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in passes defended with a total of seven and an average of 1.0 per game.

Patrick Laird Reaches Rushing Milestones, Nears Others
Patrick Laird eclipsed 1500 career rushing yards and 2000 career all-purpose yards against UCLA. His career totals now stand at 1769 and 2274 after rushing for 193 yards at Oregon State last Saturday, his sixth career 100-yard rushing performance and his first of 2018. His 5.8 yards per rush against Oregon State tied for second-best of his career (Weber State, 2017). Laird scored three touchdowns for the second time in his career at Oregon State (two rushing and one receiving). It was the second time in his career that he has scored a rushing and a receiving TD in the same game (North Carolina, 2018). He now boasts 14 career rushing touchdowns, four shy of Cal's career top-10 list in that category. Laird is the Bears' leading rusher in 2018 with 120 carries for 577 yards and five touchdowns (all team highs), while he is second in receptions with 30 catches for 185 yards on 30 receptions and a team-high-tying three touchdown grabs. He is 15 catches shy of his 2017 total of 45, which were the most by a Cal running back since 1988. His eight receptions (34 yards) at Arizona in 2018 were a career high. Laird's efforts have helped Cal lead the Pac-12 in rushing offense (196.9 ypg). The last time the Bears finished as the Pac-12's rushing leader was in 2005. Laird has an opportunity to become only the third two-time 1000-yard rusher in Cal history with the others Russell White (3) and Marshawn Lynch (2). He needs another 423 yards in 2018 to accomplish the feat. Cal's rushing efforts have led to a Pac-12 high 47.5 percent of the team's total yards (1378 rush, 2899 total) on the ground.

Season-High Eight Explosive Plays Against Oregon State
Cal boasted a season-high eight explosive plays against Oregon State, while holding the Beavers to just two explosive plays. Chase Garbers was responsible for five of the eight explosive plays (four passes, one run), while Patrick Laird had three runs and one reception of 20 or more yards. The Bears' previous season high was five explosive plays twice against Idaho State and Oregon.

Garbers Sets Career Highs Against Beavers
Chase Garbers posted career highs in passing yards (226), rushing yards (54), longest pass (55), longest run (20), while his three passing touchdowns tied a personal best (Idaho State). The 55-yard completion to Vic Wharton III is Cal's longest play from scrimmage this season. He ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in completion percentage (65.3) and fifth in pass efficiency (147.3).

McIlwain Ranks 18th In Nation In QB Rushing Yards
Brandon McIlwain is second on the team in rushing this season with 398 yards on 70 attempts. He is the top rushing quarterback in the Pac-12 (10th overall) and 18th in nation (56.9 rpg). McIlwain boasts four rushing touchdowns this season, the most by a Cal QB since Joe Ayoob rushed for three vs. New Mexico State in 2005. McIlwain also rushed for a career-high 123 yards vs. Oregon, the most by a Cal QB since Joe Kapp ran for 130 yards against Oregon in 1958. The 123 rushing yards are the most by a Pac-12 quarterback in 2018. McIlwain is within two scores of Cal's single-season record for rushing TDs by a quarterback accomplished by Davis Webb when he had six in 2016.
