Bears Claim 6 Events at Jim Click Shootout

March 31, 2012

TUCSON, Ariz. - Golden Bears captured six events, including long jump and triple jump victories by Hammed Suleman, and posted numerous personal bests during a full day of competition at the Jim Click Shootout at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

The meet featured two representatives each from the Pac-12 (Cal, host Arizona), Big Ten (Ohio State, Penn State) and ACC (Clemson, Miami). Combining the scores from each conference, the Pac-12 won with 460 points, the Big Ten took second with 422.3 points and the ACC came in third with 288.6 points.

Suleman won the men's long jump with a PR 25-5.25, which ranks seventh on Cal's all-time performer list and was the best for a Golden Bear since Chris Ferreira went 25-6.25 in 1996. Suleman's mark came on his third attempt and was nearly seven inches further than his previous top distance, 24-8.25 from April 2010.

In the triple jump, Suleman set an outdoor PR with a distance of 52-1.25, which gave him a two-inch margin of victory over Arizona's Jovan Cunningham. Suleman has a lifetime best of 52-10.75 from the 2010 indoor season, while his top outdoor mark entering Saturday's competition was 50-9.50 from spring 2011.

Derek White claimed the men's discus with an effort of 176-3, nearly nine feet further than runner-up Will Barr of Penn State (167-5). White also took fourth in the hammer when he recorded a distance of 190-9 on his fifth attempt, smashing his previous best of 176-0 from his time at DeAnza College before transferring to Cal.

Collin Jarvis came through with a victory in the men's 3000 meters, leading a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Bears. Jarvis crossed the line 8:25.58, followed by Maxime Chevee (8:26.86), Matt Miller (8:28.94) and Chris Walden (8:30.81).

On the women's side, Sydney Gray prevailed in the 800 meters and Malaina Payton took the long jump. Gray edged out Ohio State's Katie Betts, 2:12.06 to 2:13.43, and Payton took first over 11 pursuers with a mark of 19-11.00.

Several other Bears posted significant marks, including Angelica Weaver, whose third-place time of 59.13 in the women's 400-meter hurdles was not only a PR, but was the fastest for a Cal runner in four years and put her seventh on the school's all-time performer chart.

Amanda Hunter recorded a wind-aided PR of 41-8.00 in the triple jump. She went 40-7.00 at last year's Big Meet and had a top legal mark of 40-6.25 Saturday. In the women's 3000 meters, Taylor Dutch took second in 10:03.43, a 21-second improvement in the event from the 10:24.03 she ran as a freshman in March 2009.

In addition, freshman Carisma Lyday had a season-best 11.73 in the 100m, down from a wind-aided 11.98 at the March 3 Cal Outdoor Opener, and Emani Truluck covered the 110m hurdles in 13.76, just 0.03 off her PR from last year's Pac-10 Championships.

Cal's two 4x100m relays also had strong times on the day. The women's quartet of Payton, Dash Oliver, Michael Bullard and Chad Jones circled the track in 41.32 for the team's fastest mark since the 2009 season.

The Bears return to the Bay Area next weekend for Friday's San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the weekend Stanford Invitational.
