No. 6 California Posts Lowest Score of Second Round

BRYAN, Texas -
The No. 6 California Golden Bears had the best team score in the second round, posting a four-over 292 to move into the top-10 at the NCAA National Championships.
Cal started the day in 19th place after shooting a 306 (+18) in the first round. The Bears dropped 14 strokes off their day one total, coming in with a 292 in the second round to move into a three-way tie for eighth place at the halfway mark of the tournament.
"Our goal today was to get back to playing Cal golf," said head coach Nancy McDaniel. "We weren't out to do anything extraordinary. Yesterday was a bit of a disappointment, so today we just wanted to clean up some of the little shots that we left out there yesterday. And we did."
Joanne Lee shot a one-under 71 to pace the Bears for the second straight day. Lee birdied 17 (her eighth hole of the day) to sit at -1 at the turn. She gave it back on hole one, but birdied back-to-back holes on four and five to move to -2. She bogeyed seven and then closed with pars on eight and nine to finish at one-under. Lee, who is at even-par for the tournament, is currently tied for sixth place with 36 holes remaining.
Senior Pia Halbig got off to a hot start, getting a birdie on the par-five 10th hole, her first of the day, but she struggled after that, going into the back-nine at +3. She promptly birdied hole one and then went bogey-free the rest of the way to finish with a two-over 74, three-strokes better than her opening round. She is currently in a tie for 49th at +7.
Junior Daniela Holmqvist is tied with Halbig at +7 after dropping seven strokes off her first round score and carding an even-par 72 in the second round. Holmqvist birdied three of her first six holes to start the day.
"The team got into a great rhythm from the beginning and kept it up through the end of the round," McDaniel said. "I am really happy that we took a step back in the right direction. Having the lowest round today, we know we are really in this thing."
The Bears will play round three of the four-day, 72-hole championship on Friday, May 20 at the par-72, 6,260 yard Traditions Club course in Bryan, Texas. The Bears will again be starting on the tenth hole with tee times beginning at 1:30 pm Central Time.Live Scoring will be available through the NCAA website.
