The all-time series between Cal and Arizona now stands tied at 14-14-2. The Bears have dropped each of their last three games and four of their last five overall in Tucson.
Head coach Jeff Tedford now has a record of 5-3 in Pac-10 openers. In opening games of conference play since 2002, the Bears won six straight from 2003-08 (USC, at Oregon State, at Washington, Arizona State, Arizona, Washington State) before dropping their 2009 Pac-10 debut at Oregon. Cal also lost Tedford's first-ever Pac-10 game as a head coach to Washington State in 2002.
The Bears are now 13-15 against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 since 2002, Tedford's first season at Cal.
Cal's defense shut out the Wildcats in the first half, the third time in 2010 the Bears have accomplished the feat (also vs. UC Davis, and Colorado). The last time Cal notched a first-half shutout in Pac-10 play was Dec 6, 2008, vs. Washington (final was 48-7, Cal).
Against the Wildcats' passing attack, which entered the contest leading the Pac-10 and ranking No. 6 nationally with an average of 330.33 yards per game, Cal yielded just 212 yards through the air.
The total points of 19 were the lowest in the series since Arizona won, 13-6, on Nov. 5, 1994. The Bears had scored 20 of more points in the past 12 contests against Arizona.
TB Shane Vereen broke the 2,000-yard career rushing mark tonight, finishing with 2,093 yards. He entered the game as the conference leader in rushing (108.0 ypg) and scoring (16.0 ppg). Cal has had the Pac-10's rushing leader in three of the past six years, with J.J. Arrington (2004, 168.2 ypg), Marshawn Lynch (2006, 104.3 ypg) and Jahvid Best (2008, 131.7 ypg) taking the conference's rushing crowns.
Vereen extended his streak to 30 consecutive games - every one of his collegiate games - with at least one catch.
TE Spencer Ladner recorded his first career catch and WR Michael Calvin had a season-best three receptions.
DB Bryant Nnabuife recorded a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss.
DB Chris Conte made an interception (first of season, second of career) in the Cal end zone off a tipped pass breakup by DB Marc Anthony (2nd PBU of 2010) to end Arizona's final drive of the first half.
WR Marvin Jones eclipsed the 1,000-yard career mark for receiving yards, finishing the game with 1,028 yards. He entered tonight's game as the Pac-10's top pass catcher (7.0 rpg) and No. 2 in receiving yards per game and finished with four catches for 41 yards vs. UA.
DL Cameron Jordan sacked Arizona QB Nick Foles and caused his second career forced fumble, recovered by LB Mychal Kendricks (his fourth career fumble recovery) to end the first quarter. Kendricks also added two sacks to his stat line.
The 3-0 Cal advantage in the second quarter signaled the first lead by an Arizona opponent against the Wildcats in 2010.
Cal's field goal came after Kendricks' fumble recovery, giving the Bears 48 points off opponent turnovers this year.
